Everytime we read Aparbrita's poem we love it a little more. The intergenerational inheritances and exchanges between grandmother and granddaughter were so visual and lyrical that we needed to pair her poetry with an illustration, and Shazia's artwork is the perfect complement. Also the lines on the 5th slide have my heart! ❤️

Fouziya's 'The Story of Two Griefs' gives words to the feelings I think resonate with many of us. Of being caught between dualities of feeling alone yet part of a collective; despair alongside hope; and so much more. I will never forget the brutality of genocide live-streamed to us over the last 9 months, nor will I forget the unrelenting resistance. Fouziya’s poetry reflects the grief of this collective witnessing, but she also reflects a faith, hope, and love for a Free Palestine 🇵🇸

Rinku Kumari's essay on Godna art is a critical reading of a practice that traverses gender, caste, and resistance. I learnt a great deal from her writing, especially around the historical evolution of Godna and the reclamation and resistance practiced by Dusadh women. I'm also very grateful to Rinku who, when we were talking about imagery for the piece, shared her own stunning artwork. Rinku is an artist of Godna Mithila paintings as well and all the artwork is painted and shared by her ❤️

"to walk again boldly, on lonely streets, at odd times" These three lines repeat throughout Maure's poem and it resonates so deeply, as I'm sure it would for most women.

While Handprint can be difficult to read as it covers a story of sexual violence, Maure's voice as poet and teller of the story is unwavering. Following her poem she shares some contextual writing and talks about her sister, and how sharing her story created spaces of support. This was incredibly touching to read. So many of us have had to carry difficult stories silently and alone, Maure reminds us how writing, and poetry can create pathways to community and healing ❤️

"You owe me hope, I owe you rage" Gurpreet's title is the line of our times.

Anchoring her article on the erasures and misrepresentations of rage, Gurpreet writes about the willful distortion of Phoolan Devi's story by upper caste biographers and directors. Her questioning of the violence enacted through the documentation of violence is such a relevant read. It makes me think of how we document and share the violence we are currently witnessing, and alongside the rage and despair, how we record joy, hope, and resistance.

*adding an edit to point to an important distinction raised by @shweta.goswami88 in the comments that clarifies Phoolan Devi to be from the Vimukta community and why this is important to name. Please see her note, made me learn more of Vimukta feminist writing 🙌🏽
