“What language is the language of the survivor?

“What language is the language of the survivor? What is my role as a caseworker in translating this story? Would she have wanted to be remembered for her last days or for the person she was, before the incidence of violence? Can I call her neither victim nor survivor? Rather what Rohith Vemula calls a ‘glorious thing made up of stardust’. “

Kalpita’s articulation of moving between the feminist labour of hope and delusion so accurately describes how we feel in this present moment. While she centres the realities of survivors and victims of violence, and the language of this experience captures a far deeper, visceral state of being.

“I have translated the song here as an act of remembering.”

In her reflections on translations and tradition of the Lepcha communities of Sikkim Lungmying also shares the poetry this process inspired for her. She writes, “We are not known by our surname. But from our Anum Chu (mountains), From Anom and Anum Aungkyongsong (rivers). Our mother Rungyu and Father Rungeet. Our eldest brother Anum Kongchen (Mt Kanchenjunga) and by all the clans connected within us.” ❤️

“In grief, we are always translating ourselves, our dead, our losses, our love. We reach across absences with imperfect tools, inventing forms that can carry the weight. Letters, diaries, resistance songs, recipes, photographs, memorials, silence. These are all languages of grief.”

I keep thinking about her poem ‘affirmations’ in her autobiography, especially the lines “I believe in living. I believe in birth. I believe in the sweat of love and the fire of truth.” If you haven’t read it yet, please do, it’s as much an account of injustice, as it is of freedom and love.

This book is an undoing, read with us so we can be undone together.

Leanne Betasamosake Simpson’s ‘Theory of Water’ is our reading circle’s next read and so far it feels like a beautiful homecoming. Here water is more than life, ecology, resource, or metaphor but a map for us to chart relational and reciprocal ways of being. A map for as she describes it, ‘creating constellations of co-resistance.’

Honestly the more we learn of Indigenous knowledge systems the more we’re convinced it will save the world. Walk, swim, breathe, dream into this book with us!
