They try so hard so make us forget that we sinful women have never been quiet

Kishwar Naheed’s brilliant poem renders the oppressor’s language of control and shame obsolete, centering power with all the ‘sinful women.’ As women are relentlessly targeted for raising their voices, her words “Now, even if the night gives chase, these eyes shall not be put out. For the wall which has been razed, don’t insist now on raising it again” feels like it was written for today. To all the sinful women who fight in all the ways they can.

“When my daughter asks me who you were, I will tell her to hold her heart and look in the mirror.”

Enas fills her words with so much feeling that they settle into the heart of anyone who reads them. We’re so glad to share her remembering here, about a daughter’s reaction to a mother’s poem, about a grandfather she would have wanted more time with. As she says, “Perhaps one day she will also be a constellation mapped and stretched in her children’s skies.”
