Gurpreet Kaur

Gurpreet Kaur (she/her) is a feminist researcher, queer writer and creative, based in Delhi and Himachal Pradesh, India. She uses visual art, narrative writing, personal essays, poems as methods to write, express, explore stories, politics and intimacies. She actively explores, experiments and plays with ‘forms’ in writing, art and research.

This was the question that led us to Constellation

This was the question that led us to Constellations, a series that is continuously taking shape, stitching together stories of connection and resistance that people want to tell.

In this introduction Fouziya’s question leads to conversations with people who resist across borders, who are fighting to reform their spaces to match their sense of justice in a time when it is hard to find.

These conversations catalyzed the question Fouziya asks, “What might happen if we stitch these stories, and more stories, together on a world map to create constellations?”

In response we put out a call for constellations earlier this year to understand how people were bridging across borders as forms of resistance. What came our way stretched and deepened our understanding of what makes a border, and how resistance might look.

From trans-regional coalitions making zines, to intergenerational learning through poetry, virtual dinners and dreamscapes, tracing racist travel restrictions, a father’s telling of prison, pushback against academia, art and reading collectives, and traversing the distance between caste and class labour divides, and much more. Some have also curated conversations to share multiple understandings of resistance 🌺

While people develop and write their stories into being over the next few months we’ll be sharing them, like a slow but constant drip of hope. We’re lucky to work with thoughtful, conscious minds, to co-edit with @fouziyatehzeeb , to collaborate with @itsjust._.nikita on artwork, and we can’t wait to hear what you think and slowly stitch this series together ❤️

We turn inward, and to each other, as Zeina Hashem Beck says, “I’m tired of knocking on the doors of empires.”

Last weekend our reading group met under a wonderfully quiet sky to unravel, and in talking about the books we’ve been reaching for, we came away with this brilliant reading list 🌺

We were meant to read Sahar Delijani’s ‘Children of the Jacaranda Tree,’ a generational telling of Iran’s political prisoners and their children’s inherited legacies. It’s achingly relevant, but when the war began some of us reached for poetry, others in writings of nature and ecology, some dug deeper into Iranian narratives, and others sought memoirs by Black, Dalit and Trans writers who ruptured power and wrote about it.

Inspired by @isharaartfoundation reading group we’ve also included the ever-beautiful ‘Conference of the Birds’ by Attar. A very special thank you also to @tamreezi for gifting us Tishani Doshi’s ‘Girls are Coming out of the Woods’ Can’t think of a better title to describe our reading group ❤️

Remembering Kunan Poshpora with our reading circle

Remembering Kunan Poshpora with our reading circle this month, and feeling the aching reality of how institutions are built to protect awful men everywhere.

‘Do you remember Kunan Poshpora’ by Essar Batool, Ifrah Butt, Munaza Rashid, Natasha Rather, Samreena Mushtaq documents the mass rapes of Kashmiri women in the cities of Kunan and Poshpora by officers of the Indian army in February 23 1991, a day that has since been marked in recognition of Kashmiri Women’s Resistance.

As we were selecting our book this month, readers in the group made several great recommendations which we’re also sharing here (slide 3). It’s saying something that the majority of these recommendations are published by small, independent, feminist press like Zubaan, Zuka Books and Yoda Press, that centre those in the margins in deeply moving ways.
